He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently a study predicted his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom conduct transactions with the government.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the world' toward 'the humble will perish of cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

In the fifties it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Best of Us
So I have been encouraged to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump develop in this past year. It has served as great solace to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in numbers during minor elections.
