The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
