A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
