Defense Department Report Concludes Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The chat group in question included particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
