Can You Crack It? That Forgotten Netherlands Creation Which Shaped our Contemporary Globe
There are many contenders to claim the title of “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, though, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, building a simple merchant vessel required around 10 lumberjacks laboring over three months,” notes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured within a week.”
Thanks to this speedy mechanical cutter, which converted timber to planks with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could build vessels faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch naval, economic and artistic dominance across Europe and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s first true factory machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. A single part transformed the circular movement into up-and-down motion for the cutting blade. Another component transformed the rotary movement into a lateral movement advancing the log toward the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the wood forward one precise increment per stroke.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts so they acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every descending motion while moving with each return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of basic parts.”

Circular to Vertical
Design a mechanism which converts rotary motion into vertical motion. You have these components only: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two rods. A “guide”, which is a tube or sleeve into which one of the rods can slide perfectly. (Consider that it is possible to put things on a stand, so that the parts do not fall down.)
