California is Entirely Free of Drought for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.
Following 25 long years, not a single part of California is facing dryness. This milestone follows challenging years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated fire dangers and challenged its massive agricultural sector.
A Map Indicates Zero Abnormally Dry Areas
Thursday's report from the national drought tracker showed that California in its entirety is free from dry or drought conditions. This development resulted from a period of heavy precipitation that helped fill key lakes like the state's largest lakes exceeding their historic averages.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a weather expert.
After Severe Systems to Soggy Celebrations
The journey here included intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, leading to significant overflow, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Until late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 washed away those final dry conditions.
The Vital Sierra Snow Remains a Concern
But, experts warn that the end of drought status does not mean being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is only about 70% of the historical norm.
This frozen reservoir, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Water officials stress that it is too early to determine the outlook for the months ahead.
“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
While the drought map indicates no dryness, the focus now shifts to preserving this precious water balance for the coming seasons.
