F1 has introduced the official terminology that will be used to explain the technical complexities of its upcoming 2026 technical rules.

The sport is implementing what is considered the largest rules overhaul in its competitive history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the mandatory use of 100% sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a substantially higher electrical capacity, necessitating key advancements in the cars' aerodynamics.

Over a race distance, drivers will strategically manage battery power – potentially on qualifying laps – to extract the optimal lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a mix of viewers, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which terms would improve understanding of the central aspects of the upcoming rules.

The key objective was to make a range of advanced technical aspects of the sport as accessible as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for certain devices – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the active aerodynamics – have been discarded in favor of intuitive labels that directly explain the actual function of the technology.

Exploring the New Tech

According to rule-makers that racers will have greater control to choose strategies regarding power usage, energy recovery, and saving energy.

The 2026 rules feature a set of functions that will be clearly indicated on broadcast screens to improve the viewers' comprehension of the race battle.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the present overtaking aid. It provides a surge of additional ERS power accessible when a competitor is within one second the car ahead to execute an overtaking maneuver.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the ERS that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It provides the driver peak output at the push of a button.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Active Aero: Both the car's wings adjust their angles – opening on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and increased velocity, and sealing in the bends for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: Cars can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during throttle lift at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only partial power is applied.

Car Design Evolution

The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter relative to current models, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight lowered by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although squads will naturally regain performance as they refine their designs.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The cars will employ moveable wing elements – both wings will adjust on the straight sections to improve speed and increase straightline speed and click back into place for peak handling.

Pirelli tyres will keep the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be slimmer, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30mm at the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The revised hybrid units will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the petrol engine and the battery and motor, a rise from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.

The energy recovery system is streamlined through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey component that generated electricity from the exhaust turbo.

Cars will be obliged to compete on 100% sustainable fuel, created from biomass or synthetic industrial processes.
